Reports to: CTO

Workload: full time (Monday - Friday 10am - 6:30pm)

Salary: £25,000-28,000 pa.

We’re looking for a versatile researcher with a background in Chemical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering to join our team. This is an opportunity to assist in novel product development, bioplastic production and lab-based research focussed on pushing our materials to the next level. The role will include a strong focus on chemical treatment and purification, as well as the scaling of our in-house systems from lab to pilot scale.

A background in separation techniques, biochemical processes and heat transfer is key for this role.


  • Primary focus on bioplastic production in the Chip[s] Board lab

  • Operation of our water purification rig

  • Improve production efficiency and assess opportunities for modification and scaling

  • Coordinate with team in planning experiments as well as running experiments independently to improve rig performance

  • Communicate the progress and data analysis in the form of technical reports

  • Work on P&IDs to assist with the design of a pilot-scale production facility

  • Maintain lab safety and provide safety guidance to researchers in the lab

Skills & Requirements

  • MSc Chemical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering

  • Experience using GAMS, MATLAB, python or aspen is beneficial

  • Industry experience preferred; research experience essential

  • Well-developed independent research skills

  • Significant lab experience

  • Ability to work in fast-paced start-up environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Effective written and oral communication skills
